The Sea Ranch School of Photography hosts a series of in-field studies as well as extended group trips or tours. Each excursion features certain wildlife that may be in season at that time, and specific techniques that will be covered by tour leaders.
Initially, please contact The Sea Ranch School of Photography directly to schedule a date if you are interested in joining one of the tours listed below if a date is not already specified. Once the dates are finalized they will be posted here and on the calendar.
Logistics:
- Clients are responsible for local lodging, meals and transportation.
- The Sea Ranch School of Photography will provide links to local establishments recommended for lodging and meals.
- Car pooling is highly encouraged and The Sea Ranch School of Photography will assist clients in arranging car pools.
- The Sea Ranch School of Photography will provide an “introductions” breakfast and a concluding “wrap-up” dinner.
- For international tours the price includes local lodging, meals and local transportation.
California Coastal Winter Bird Migration
Excellent opportunities to photograph thousands of shorebirds, sea birds, birds of prey and water birds. We coordinate our activities to coincide with a rising tide to ensure excellent viewing and photography.

California Central Valley Winter Bird Migration
We visit the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), Delavan NWR and Grey Lodge WR where hundreds of thousands of birds stop over in their yearly migration cycle. Spectacular morning and evening flights offer excellent opportunities for bird photography. Multiple species of geese and ducks are in abundance, as well as Sandhill Cranes and Tundra Swans. In addition, we should get excellent views of many birds of prey including Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Red Tailed Hawks and Ferruginous Hawks.

Mono Lake and the Eastern Sierra – Spring
Excellent opportunities to photograph the spectacular tufa formations and the eerie colors of sunrise and sunset at Mono Lake, spring wild flowers, waterfalls in eastern Yosemite, Bodie - a true California ghost town and the gnarly bristle cone pines south of the eastern Sierra.

Mono Lake and the Eastern Sierra – Fall

Nesting Herons and Egrets
Excellent opportunities to photograph Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets and Black Crowned Night Herons. Experience the courtship dances, nest building and chick rearing.

Harbor Seal Rookeries, Majestic Redwoods, Pacific Rhododendron and coastal wild flowers
Experience the numerous photographic opportunities along the north coast of California in and around The Sea Ranch. There will be excellent views of harbor seals in their rookery with the possibility to capture a birth. The color of the native rhododendron is spectacular. In addition, we will focus on macro photography of wild flowers.
